Joining Asda as a Data Graduate, you will be working within the Geospatial & Market team, who provide geospatial and market intelligence and insight across Asda. We work most closely with our property team, supporting location planning and finding the optimal locations to open more grocery/convenience stores. You will be joining us at an exciting time as we’re looking at opening hundreds of new convenience stores over the next couple of years.

Furthermore, we provide data to support our Marketing and Buying teams to deliver targeted marketing campaigns and support operational decision-making. For example, we provide insight and analytics on where to apply marketing for Ramadan, and where to run more lines on our price match campaigns. On top of this we receive many ad-hoc requests from other areas of the business, so you’ll have the opportunity to work with a variety of stakeholders and have an impact on many different business-critical projects.

Your role will involve data engineering in the form of data manipulation, building data pipelines, data cleaning, working to configure a database and data analysis. There will also be the opportunity to build out visualisations for the data once the engineering is complete and create dashboards that support workstreams within the business.

  • An interest in geography, geospatial data and working with data in general.
  • You will need solid communication skills and be comfortable handling conversations with different stakeholders across the business.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills is an essential part of the role also as this will lend itself well to solving the numerous challenges with conducting engineering data.
  • Resilience and adaptability are also key – Retail is a fast-changing and constantly evolving environment.

Technical skills required -

  • Experience working with a programming language such as SQL/python/r/scala
  • Working with GIS software such as ESRI ArcGIS/QGIS/MapInfo/Carto
  • Some dashboarding/visualisation experience such as PowerBI/Tableau

Over the 2-year programme, you can expect to learn:

  • Fundamental knowledge of how to engineer data – data cleaning, data manipulation, exploratory data analysis
  • Data Fluency and Literacy – understanding the core concepts of using data within a business
  • Stakeholder Management – building confidence in communicating with stakeholders, understanding their challenges, and translating those into data solutions
  • Teamworking Experience – learning how to collaborate within a team that focuses on delivery and value
