New year, new you! Nonsense or just good sense?

Published on: 4 Jan 2024

We vow to exercise more, eat healthier, read more books, learn a new language, focus on people that make 'your cup feel full'... the list goes on!

But let's face it - New Year's resolutions are often just wishful thinking wrapped in a shiny, time-stamped package.

So, instead of setting these whimsical resolutions that tend to vanish faster than a snowflake in spring, (and make you feel guilty and awful that you have not successfully achieved them), why not opt for something more substantial?

Welcome to the world of goal setting.

Rather than fleeting promises, goals offer a roadmap to success. And when it comes to your career, setting the right goals can be a game-changer.

So, bid adieu to those cliched January resolutions and let's talk about real, tangible career goals that can ignite your professional journey:

1, Skill Mastery:
In the ever-evolving job market, acquiring and honing new skills is akin to adding feathers to your cap. Set specific goals to learn a new programming language, earn a new certification relevant to your industry and line of work, (leisure and hospitality are abundant of these), or improve your confidence at dealing with difficult customers or public speaking. Tangible skills often serve as a springboard for career advancement. Make a list of those areas you feel you may be weak in or those qualifications that you know will give you a lift up, in the nearby future.

2, Networking Nirvana:
The old-age adage, "it's not what you know, it's who you know" still holds weight. Cultivate a goal to expand your professional network. Attend industry conferences and exhibitions, join online forums, or schedule regular coffee meetings with professionals in your field. Building connections can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

3, Career Advancement:
Climbing the career ladder doesn't happen overnight. Set clear, actionable goals for where you want to be in your career in the next one, three, or five years. It's very easy to get complacent and just float without any clear goals. Whether it's aiming for a promotion, transitioning to a new role, or starting your own venture, chart a path and break it down into achievable steps.

4, Work-Life Balance:
Amidst the hustle and bustle of career aspirations, don't forget to set goals for your well-being. Your health and mental health tops any goal or list you may have. Establish boundaries between work and personal life, schedule regular breaks, and prioritise self-care. A harmonious work-life balance is essential for sustained success and happiness.

5, Financial Flourising:
Money matters, and setting financial goals can be instrumental in shaping your career trajectory. Whether it's saving a specific amount, investing wisely, or negotiating a higher salary, align your financial goals with your career aspirations.

Remember, the key to setting effective career goals lies in their specificity, measurability, achievability, relevance, and timeliness (SMART). Break down these goals into smaller milestones and celebrate each accomplishment along the way.

While setting a resolution is all about trying to force a change, setting a goal is all about making something happen. So bid farewell to the era of fleeting resolutions and raise a glass to a year filled with purposeful aspirations, focused determination and a successful year ahead!
